After Effects - Effects Library

Hi,
As a fairly new user of AE I find that I spend heaps of time playing around with effects before I find one that's going to accomplish the effect I'm going for. This is made even more difficult when I don't set out with something exact in mind as I can spend hours trawling through cool effects until I get to where I'm going.
So I suppose my question is, is there any list, online or otherwise which gives examples of what each effect can accomplish to use as a quick reference rather than having to learn each and every effect? I know that there are issues with such a library as the range of effects that are achievable with each individual effect can sometimes be so massive that a still or even a short clip might not be able to do it justice. That withstanding I still believe a reference could be mighty useful if only to jog memory on some of the more obscurely titled effects.

I don't know of a resource like the one you have requested, but what I can tell you is that the Brainstorm feature directly inside After Effects is invaluable.
You can set a few simple parameters and AE will automatically spit out a bunch of iterations of a given effect. It doesn't stop there either. You can use it to dream up variations of just about anything you can keyframe.
