No sound in AE CS4

Hi!
i am currently working on a trial version of After Effects CS4. My problem is, AE doesn't recognize audio files as audio files. I cannot play them, cannot see tha waveform, and when I play my composition, the bars in the audio meter are not moving.
My layer in the compostition is not recognized as audio, because I cannot apply the audio switch for it. the file is a 48kHz Wave-file, so that should not be a problem. I have searched through the forum, not finding an answer to my problem; how to make this audio file work.

I am not that new to AE.... If RAM Preview had been the problem, i would have solved it right away. No threads here have dealt with this exact issue.
Like I said, the problem is that AE doesn't recognize the file as an audio file. I therefore cannot RAM prewiev it with the video. Neither does it work with only audio preview. The transform drop menu in the composition window also isn't operative. I only get the lock symbol at the left side, not the "eye", the "speaker" and the "dot".
Also the audio file doesn't play from the project window. I have used several versions of AE earlier, with no complications.

can you hear that specific wav file in the other versions of ae? or even in another program like an nle or media player perhaps?
if the file is fine there are a few things you could try.... when ae does things that are completely unexplainable, i've found that re-booting often helps. also removing the entire folder that contains the after effects pref file can sometimes help.

I have the same problem.
No problem with Premiere or Sound booth CS4 on PC playing .wav or .mov files. After Effect CS4 will not play the files. The audio window does not function. The audio waves are seen in the timeline, Is this a bug or do I need to change a setting?

I have until now not solved the problem. But an idea is to start with the videos in a premiere project. Then replace the clips with after effects composition. That worked for me because I currently only deal with talking heads that needs keying.

When I import .mp3 files I get an error:
Audio conforming failed: Check media cache preferences. After i click "ok" the file gets imported the icon at the top of the project window displays that it it's a sound file, color coding in the time line looks normal(green), but it does not play and it does not display an audio wave in the layer window.
When i import .wav files I do not get the error message, but file does not look normal: it's grey in the time line, It does not have a sound wave icon at the top of the project window, it does not display an audio wave in layer window and it DOES NOT WORK

I have heard of problems relating to newer kinds of WAV files; they somehow have a frame rate associated with them. I've only HEARD of this; I've never experienced it.

In my case the Conformed Media Cache was not assigned to any folder.
Try going to Edit>Preferences>Media and Disk Cache>Conformed Media Cache and assign (choose from the drop down menu) a folder. I have the same folder assigned for both Cache and Database.

Same here, but maybe with a little variation; all audio files import ok, waveform is available as are all other icons, but it doesn't play ....
It does export though ....
Above mentioned settings-changes fixed this issue for me as well ....

I've been fighting this for months myself. I can SEE the waveform after I did the cache routine. However, no previews are available and I can't even contemplate trying adding sound effects.
The other thing I just noticed is that the .ffx files do not work in Bridge either.
I can render the audio out by making sure I have selected Render with audio. Premier doesn't have the problem.. primarily AE and Bridge.
Help???

I had the same issue, finally, found that the "audio" tab wasn't selected in Composition/Preview/Audio, it needs to be ticked.
Solved, at least, that was my problem.
Regards.

I was just experiencing this same issue, and the fix, for me, was to change the preference setting for Audio Hardware (Preferences>AudioHardware) from "Built In" (which I assume is the default) to "Built In Digital Output" (my speakers are connected to the optical digital out).
I had the same problem, no sound, no waveform display in after effects and I found my solution.
My clips were captured via component signal with the Matrox MXO2 in Final Cut Pro and it happens that the matrox captures more than 2 tracks of audio. My first 2 tracks had sound in them but the rest didn't. For some strange reason when I imported these files into AE the software only recognized the tracks without data.
I had to remove the soundless audio tracks from the Final Cut Pro timeline and then reimport the XML generated from Final to After Effects.

I am having similar problems with hearing any audio, I am importing mp3's, (aif's & m4a's wont scroll on the time line) I can see the wave file in the audio box, I have the composition/preview/audio check marked, and I have a location for media and disk caches, /Users/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common/ for the database, and /Volume/MyComputer/1143/Media Cache for cache. Is there something that I am missing? Are my folder locations incorrect? I am importing stock files so I don't think that it can be an issue with my raw footage. PLEASE HELP!!!!
It will much simpler for me to edit to sound in AE instead of having to export every rendered clip into FinalCut before being sure my timing for effects are correct. Any suggestions?
