Newbie needs help.
by Michael Fisher on Aug 19, 2008 at 8:52:41 am

I know this may sound like a really simple question for you guys but I am new to after effects. I have been using premiere for ages now and have dreaded using after effects for fear of a new learning curve. Well, I finally bit the bullet and got it. I have done some fun things as I am slowly learning my way around but I am stumped on 1 effect. I have some footage I want to add the beam effect on...BUT...everytime I use the effect or simply drag and drop onto the footage it just goes black. I can't judge where the beam effect starts or stops without seeing it on the footage. Any help at all would be appreciated. PLEASE HELP.

Right now the effect is creating the beam over TRANSPARENCY. You simply have to change a setting in the effect. I forget its actual name, but it's something like "Draw on layer" or "Paint on layer"... something like that.

Play around with it and life gets good again.

you can also apply the effect on a solid that is over the footage. this can be useful if you want to add another effect to the beam (maybe a color effect or a blur) that would otherwise effect the footage layer too.
