You shouldn't use compressed formats like mpeg in AE because it can result in rendering problems, not to mention slow scrubbing. Convert your footage to a format with full frames, such as quicktime animation or lossless avi.

When i conveted my footage to .avi the quality was horrible. I unfortunately use a sony hdr-sr5. meaning I dont get to record my footage as so many others do with a mini dv because of the hard drive thing.

Get on the forum for the editing software you use. Find out how to capture Sony-style AVCHD video, or how to convert mpeg video to a lossless codec.
That's the problem with these stinkin' little pea-shooter HD Handycams: they're intended for Dad to shoot Little Debbie's dance recital, and play it back on a Sony TV. They're not really intended for real work.

if you feel like buying something, then cineform software will capture your camera video, change inter to intraframe and you won't have to spend time re-encoding anything just to use it.
