How can I become great at making Music Videos?
by Andrew Nicholas on Jul 22, 2008 at 11:30:57 pm

Hey!

This is my first post and I come here humbled and exhausted. I've been learning AE for the last few days, I'm good at FCP but this is my first foray into motion graphics and all the fancy 3d stuff etc.

I'm learning because I want to get good at making music videos. Yes I appreciate there are many ways to make 'em, but I know that the modern director needs to know how to use AE to create some awesome compositions.

There's two videos in particular that I want to learn how to make myself, I know they're not exactly the biggest budget videos in the world and I'd love to be able to have the skills to make them.

Would people here please help me as I'm so overwhelmed I don't know where to turn!

Looking at this first video -

I really like the simplicity. From what I can see the performer was shot against a green screen from a couple different angles, around 10 or so, her hair all done up and with the whole 80's cheesey wind (it's like a retro vid).

Then various backgrounds were comped together to create the effects. Such as the photo of the stars which appears to move. There also appears to be stock footage of the dancers which is keyed and made strange!

I was wondering if anyone knew how they'd make this video as it's out of my grasp!

Here's a second video -

From what I can see here this was also shot on a green screen from a variety of angles and comped together to give the ironic boy band look.

Then there's stock footage of the cities etc added and blended together.

I don't understnad how the flying grid thing is made?

I then think the bit at the end with the floating heads is just creating the video they want, animating it, then creating duplicates that are parented to the original, and reduced in size etc, to fit the rotation. How's that analysis?

If you're still reading thank you you are brilliant!

I'd really appreciate A) If anyone could shed light onto how they'd make the above videos as it's still so new to make it seems to impossible.

B) I'd also really appreciate if anyone can direct me to somewhere online where one can read about how to use AE to make music videos, because apart from the odd article it stumps me still!

Perhaps there is a super video tutorial online? I see loads on how to create light sabers and fancy titles etc, but I can't see anything that would say ok here we have band Y, we've keyed them out,now lets make some backgrounds!

C) Lastly, would anyone please recommend what learning I can do to become great at AE, specifically with this intention of becoming and awesome music video director.

Part of me doesn't know this world very well and I don't know how hands on the, lets say, mid level directors are, i.e. do they just coordinate the shoots and then when they're in post are they the ones actually editing and creating the backgrounds or do they have specialist staff with whom they'd work and they just sit in and direct the editing, but don't actually do the creating?

I'd like to learn how to do it all and I'd really appreciate some guiders, as I said, I'm so lost!

I know this has been a really long post, and I apologise! I guess I just feel so really restless in my life at the moment because I know this is what I want to do but I feel lost about how to achieve it, so I appreciate anything you can offer!

Thanks so much
Andy
