How do I turn on the camera safe and film safe areas in AE?
by John Taylor on May 21, 2008 at 3:38:02 am

Hi every one I'm not sure what the names are of these things I'm looking for but hopefully I can describe them clearly enough to have you guys know what I'm talking about.

You know those little boxes like one I think is called the text safe area and the camera safe area they get made automatically in Photoshop as guides when you make a 720 wide by 480 high DVD NTCS format in PS.

How do I turn those on and off in AE? Or do I just turn on rulers and make then myself? Thanks for the help in advance everyone.

John

This is an easy one :)

if I know what version of AE you're running hehehe

AE CS3 its normally located in this format..
at the bottom of your comp view theres the following things..

[zoom] [choose grid/guide options] [show mask borders] [current time]

click the [choose grid/guide options] looks like [+] kinda..

theres a bunch of things on there but the first one should be "title/action safe"

click that to turn on or off :)

The shortcut, on my UK keyboard at least, it to hit the apostrophe key. On my keyboard this is also the @ key, though I know in the states the @ key is one of the number keys. It's the one two to the left of the return key and just under the [ key.

[Simon Bonner] "It's the one two to the left of the return key and just under the [ key."

Sounds about right, although my ' is one to the left of the return key... Crazy americans.

I found out how to turn on the action zone marks and the title safe zone in AE CS3Thx for the help guys. But now I have a quick follow up question:

Now it looks to me like the action safe area is ok for having text in there because I'm building kiosk and there is A LOT of text and pictures to fit in a 720 wide by 480 high areas so I have squeezed the content pictures and text within the Action Zone. When I publish the file in a DVD it looks like only the area outside the action zone is being cropped.

I'm a bit concerned case the help file in AE CS3 says you should place the text in the Safe Zone. So I guess my follow up question is how iron clad is the rule that next needs to go only in the title safe zone and can you get away with having text in the action zone as well?

Thank in advance for the help.

John

The Title Safe is recommended because that will always be clearly visible on pretty much every display. The Action Safe should be visible on a majority of displays. Realistically you can probably push your text to about halfway between Title and Action safe, but I don't recommend it.
