MacPro slow with lights in 3d comp

I seem to remember the lights worked better in AE 6.5 than in CS3. I have a DV comp with 3d text, a floor and a wall layer, two spotlights casting 3d text shadows onto the floor and wall and a camera. With lights turned on my machine bogs down. I have a 4-5 year old PC with AE 6.5 pro and it does a lot better in this regard. I have tried turning on and off multi-processing and it did not seem to matter. I can not even scrub the timeline!

if you haven't already, try disabling opengl... in the previews preference uncheck the 'enable opengl' box and set 'accelerate effects using' to use adaptive resolution. then try enabling multiprocessing.
multiprocessing and opengl rendering are not compatible, so if opengl is being used for previews, multiprocessing will be disabled for previews.
i'm not sure how much this will help, but it seems worth trying...

Duh!
I never use OpenGL, it doesn't really work all that great in AE. But what do I see? OpenGL was activated for my previews. Turned OpenGL off and Adaptive on = Violla! Speedier previews!
