MAC or PC?
by valerie toumayan on May 20, 2008 at 2:24:45 pm

Hello

I've always been working on a PC (home made)
But i'm about to buy a Mac Pro :

# One 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
# 2Go (2x1Go)
# ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB GDDR3

My PC is :

Windows XP pro
Inter Core 2 CPU
6300 @ 1.86 GHz
2 Go Ram
Nvidia GeForce 6200 TurboCache

I wanted to know what's better to have, a PC or a MAC?
I guess it depens of course, of its configuration.
But i've always heard that After Effects and when it comes to video programs, it's better on PC...

Plus I feel the navigation of the PC smoother than on a MAC, so that's what scares me a bit, to change : i'm afraid not to be as fast on a MAC than on my PC...

Any advices or comment about the difference between both?

thanks!
valerie

the main reasons to choose a specific platform over another is the software that is available and which you feel more comfortable on...

you already mentioned that you feel more comfortable on pc, so i'd say that's a big reason for you to stick with a pc. it's pretty helpful in troubleshooting problems if you are already familiar with a particular platform.

most software that is multi-platform, like ae, is virtually about the same user-wise on either platform.. it's really just a matter of training your pinky to use the alt key or the command key when using keyboard shortcuts. but other software you may want to use may only be available for one platform.. so if you really want to learn software like final cut pro, you'll need a mac; if you use software like 3d studio max, you'll need a pc.

one last note... on a mac the os is 64-bit, so it will utilize as much ram as you can currently through at it (well... the limit for any 32-bit application is 3gb, but with a multi-processing appliacation like ae it is 3gb per processing core). the same holds true for windows64/vista64, however if you plan to use a 32 bit windows/vista os, then you max system memory is only 4gb (a 32-bit os can only address 3gb of ram, 4gb if you use a special init file).

i hope that helps some....
