Jagged edges during AE moves
by Dave Blaire on May 9, 2008 at 1:29:04 pm

I've noticed when I bring text up quickly the edges get very stair-steppy while it's moving. I've tried field rendering, frame rendering, putting motion blur on, and it's always like that. I'm using a DV/NTSC Composition, and it happens when I render out as Animation or DVPRO50. Is there a way around this?

Thanks,

Dave

That's never, EVER happened to me. Are you doing this over black, or something?

It happens no matter what the background. Here's a link to an example. This was a field rendered Animation.

Here's a better example. The graphic was rendered as an Animation with alpha and brought in to a DVPRO50 timeline.

I haven't been able to download that example so far. But I'll take a wild guess -- you see this when you bring the footage into FCP, and you don't have a video monitor, just those little pea-shooter FCP viewers.

At least try making the viewers 100%, or at best hook up a monitor. Then see how it looks.

No, I'm using a Sony HR Trinitron monitor. In fact, you see the problem much more on the CRT than you do on the flat screen. If you download the quicktime from the yousendit link (the second one I sent) and bring it in to FCP and watch it on a CRT, you'll see what I'm talking about.

I DID use the second URL. Still no joy. Please go into detail on what you're doing in your AE comp. What are you using as text: AE text layers, the old-style text effects, or photoshop or illustrator documents? Or something else?

Got any effects applied to the text? Is this in 2D or 3D?

Do you mean you weren't able to download the file? I just tried and it seems to be working. Here's the link again. The file is called jagged edges 2.mov

I'm using text created in in AE with just a simple scale effect from 0 to 100 in about 1 second, no other effects on it.

Were you ever able to download that example?

Nope. After two hours of waiting for the download to begin, I gave up.

Did you click the "Download Now" button? I just went to the link and it's working.

Third time -- it doesn't work. Not everything gets through the company firewall.
