Best codec to use???
by dotan on Apr 22, 2007 at 9:38:53 am

I have a project i did in AE its 6 min and 640x480 its gonna shown on a laptop and the frame rate is 25 im not sure if i should use higher
my question is im importing it to premiere so how can i get the best quality for the finished file?
its gonna play from the computer so i don't want a really heavy file
what i did was export it from from AE using quick time animation codec and then imported it to premiere but now im not sure what codec to use cause the quick time is over 2 GB
what is the best solution?

maybe some form of mpeg4 ... quicktime h.264 would be good if you have QT7.... maybe sorenson3 if you want it to be more compatible with other machines....... try a few different options till you find what you want... you may even try DV or photoJPEG

dv or dv50 should play fine on most computers, the data rates are within firewire standards and the files won't be too large. mpeg-2 wouldn't be a bad choice either... if it's good enough for the dvd industry it should be good enough for most other people. however, a third party utility may create better quality mpeg-2s than premiere, do you have adobe's dvd authoring software?

one other suggestion would be to work with progressive frames rather than interlaced. not only will it look better on a computer screen, but compression will usually have a less negative effect on image quality.

I get pretty good results using AVI-microsoft DV as my setting. It will play fine on most computers. Also, as previously mentionned, render without fields.
