i have a sony hdr fx 1000 video camera - i want to hook it up to my macbook pro using final cut pro 7 so i can log and capture from the video camera - i wasn't sure if i had my settings right in the camera so i reset them to the original settings - i tried using the easy set up in final cut pro 7 but - i think those settings are either not right because when I try to log and capture it says that there is no communication - apparently between the camera and the mac - so thats how i know the settings are not right in my final cut - does anyone out here have this camera that could just tell me the settings or maybe i need to set something in my camera - i just recently purchased the camera online but it didnt come with an instruction manual...im using a fire wire 400 cable ... i have a mac book pro 2.16 mgh with snow leopard 10.6.8 and im using fcp 7

Here's a link to the manual, see if it helps.

Connect and have the camera open before you start FC.
In Capture Prest chose HDV.
In Device Control try SONY HDV FW.
Open the capture window and see if there is communication with the camera.

If do not work try HDV FW.

Do you have the camera in "VTR mode"?

Right.
Whatever the camera you use you need to set it like that.
OK, you can not control the camera, but do you get the picture in the capture Window?
You may be having problems with the FW cable.
With the camera connected, open QT Player and try the "Video Recorder".
See if you are able to capture that way. If not then may be the cable.
If yes, you can, then is an FC problem.

It doesn't makes any difference, but as long as the FW is not used anymore in new Macs, buy the FW-800 to Mini-FW.

being that my friend paid with a credit card and wasnt with me at the time of exchange - they would only allow me to do an even exchange - other then that I just opened it and it has to be something that is not setup right in FCP 7 .

Firewire cables do go bad sometimes but I think it is rare. Sometimes, I find its the order of what is plugged in and turned on, and what is already hooked up when you start FCP that affects if a camera is recognized. The Sony needs to be in deck mode, certainly, for this to work, as well. Start it playing out by hand, then, try the different settings in log and capture until you see the screen pop into picture.
