Unrendered Footage in New Sequence

Unrendered Footage in New Sequence

I am importing 1280x720 NTSC quicktime clips (sorry for any unneeded specifics:) via a Nikon D300s into a new FC project. Upon pulling them into the timeline, I immediately get the red 'undrendedred' line above the clips. In the past, when starting a new project and/or sequence it seemed that FC asked if I wanted the settings for whatever clip was first dragged into the timeline to become the settings for the entire sequence. This is not happening. What can I do so that the media I am importing doesn't need to be rendered? Thanks!

...trying to match sequence settings to what is displayed by the 'item properties' of the clips I have in the timeline. Also I trashed preferences. Nothing has worked yet...

...lastly, the Nikon D300s is mainly a still shot camera. I am using its 'live mode' to record video. I am importing this video as via a USB cable and it comes in as a .avi file. If I attempt a 'log and capture', FC does not see the Nikon. This was part of an attempt to get FC sync with the settings of the camera so perhaps the incoming media would be accepted right off the bat. Thanks for any help.

FCP doesn't work with those files natively...you have to convert them before you can start editing them. ProRes is the format of choice...use MPEG STREAMCLIP to do it.

Your sequence must be new or completely empty to give you that pop-up for matching settings - FYI.

Yes - I created a new sequence in a new project to invoke that 'default sequence settings' dialogue FC would normally produce. Thanks for emphasizing that.

So I have choosen QuickTime Movie as the file format and Apple ProRes 422 as the compression option. I am leaving the rest as is. However, I'm confused about the 'Dimensions' parameter in the 'Export Size Settings' box. The choices are 'compressor native' or 'current'.

Well, for frame rate, what is the original? Is it 29.97...or straight 30? 23.98?

Thanks Shane. The original frame rate apparently is 24 - I went to MPEG Streamclip - Stream Info to double check. The frame size is 1280 x 720...well here is what the exact screen shows for the two (test) video clips:
