I've discovered the setting in Final Cut Pro X that will let you transcode files to ProRes on import. Are there any pros or cons transcoding directly in FCP X instead of using Compressor 4? What advantages would transcoding in one app have over the other? I've always used Compressor so my instinct is to stay with that, but I want to hear others' thoughts on it.

No real cons - it's using compressor even if you haven't purchased it. It's a headless back end conversion. The disadvantage is your computer is working hard while you try and edit.
