recreating compression artifacts / distortion
by Simon Burrill on Oct 25, 2008 at 12:40:55 am

Hi

This seemed the most appropriate forum to post this question in, and I hope someone can help.

Below is an image from an xvid .avi played through quicktime. I'm sure you've all seen it when this happens...

I'm trying to recreate these compression artefacts in a sustained way over a 10 second clip, as a project. I've been digging around google for days and can't find a thing. My limited knowledge suggests it's something to do with i-frames but I could be way off. The file is fine it's playback, and it's entirely random

I don't know if there's a plugin, or a sure fire way to mess up video in this way, but I thought someone out there might have an idea.

I've tried to do this as well for the purpose of training. It's very difficult to convincingly recreate stuff like this.

I'd love to hear from anybody who has found a successful way
