JPEG 2000 as a source?
by George Sims on May 21, 2008 at 4:43:33 pm

Hey Gurus,

Anyone out there use source footage compressed in the JPEG 2000 container?

I'm looking for a space vs. quality alternative to Animation.

The tests I've done in both PP and FCP have all looked great (only hitches have been added render times and slightly choppy playback while in it's native JPEG2000 format). The plus is that the quality is pretty dang close to Animaton but at 1/8 of the size.

.H264 and DV are all too washed out and slightly diffused for my tastes and I need something that is manageable in both PP and FCP.

Any other suggested alternatives? and/or

Any thoughts on WHY JPEG2000 is NOT a good source?

Many thanks!

JPEG2000 is being used in Digital Cinema and is therefore considered high enough quality however it is not recommended for use with field based content, so unless you work with 100% progressive material it's not your best choice.

This site should help you decide on the best codec:
