Here I am, right after I said that there's no work around...
It may just be possible to turn the keyed man to black, comp that on white and do an auto trace. Use the animated spline thus created for a mask- eliminate some points on it to make it more rough, and "break" the remaining points to get straight lines and sharp corners...
