Infrared Look
by Corey Whitley on Nov 5, 2009 at 8:48:46 pm

Does anyone know if there is a plugin or filter to make video images seem infrared or thermographed?

Or perhaps a way to manually manipulate footage to seem thermographed?

Thanks.

Try typing 'infrared' into the Effects & Presets panel. Behold! A built-in animation preset called 'Colorize - infrared'.

Or you could search for 'infrared' in After Effects Community Help and find that plus a few other solutions.

Yar, but it's only a false color simulation. Today's audiences won't be fooled for long. You've got isolate heat-producing objects and make them stand out from the cooler objects. See "The Cove" for lots of IR footage.

Yeah, like Bogie says.

Here's the deal: infrared cameras see different things as being bright. For example, a guy pulls over on a dark road at night, and he's leaning against the hood of his black car. He's wearing day-glow orange clothes. The guy's face & hands stand out against his clothing, and the hood of the car behind him is glowing to beat the band. A normal camera would see the shot quite differently.

So I guess the real question is, "How realistic does this have to look?"

I don't know if we're all on the same page ... I think Corey's talking about a "heat sensitive Predator look", right?

If so, yeah, I'd mess around with Colorama. Anybody else?

Oh, yeah, Steve, the original post mentioned a thermograph. I think we're all on the same page. At least I hope we are....
