create layer marker on a macbook?
by Jason Brown on Oct 20, 2009 at 11:43:44 pm

Hey Guys...

I typically use the asterisk key on the keypad to create a layer marker...but on my laptop, I don't have a number pad...what is the shortcut when using a limited keyboard without numberpad?

That symbol just doesn't exist on the new MacBook Pro keyboards, since Apple entirely removed the numeric keypad.

You can remap the command to a different shortcut, get an external (USB) numeric keypad, or even use an iPhone app to turn an iPhone into an external numeric keypad.

There are instructions for remapping keyboard shortcuts on this page.

They've dropped the embedded numerics from the right half of the main keyboard? No more fn+P for markers?

Yes. They removed a lot of useful keys from the MacBook Pro keyboards.

In this post I point out another useful feature that these maddeningly incomplete, crippled sub-keyboards make really hard to get to and use. There are many such features.

There is no labeling other than the main one on any keys on my MacBookPro...Fn + P opens Position parameter. I don't have any experience with earlier models.

Someone on this forum introduced me to "KeyEd Up"
I think it's for CS4. It's free

It's been really helpful for remapping keyboard shortcuts for the macbook when you don't have a keypad
