Changing default "Custom" resolution size?
by ben g unguren on Jul 29, 2009 at 9:02:37 pm

Hi all,
It seems like this should be a no-brainer, but I can't find it anywhere. When working in HD, especially when doing large-scale color correction, I'll set the custom resolution to rendering every 16 or 20 pixels. The hotkey for custom resolution is command+option+j, but that always seems to default to 5 pixels. So every time I move from an upper resolution down to custom, I have to manually set the number.

I've been doing this repeatedly lately -- there must be some way to automate this, some pref or hotkey that I'm not finding. Help?

(OS X 10.4, AE CS3)

The custom resolution setting isn't persistent. This is a good feature request, though.

Here's a link to the feature-request/bug-report form.

Ah, shucks. But thanks for the link -- the request has been submitted.

In case anyone is doing a search, you *can* change the default custom size if in the prefs file (on a Mac, it's in your user directory: ~/Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/[... your version, etc] Adobe After Effects [X.X] Prefs). QUIT AE FIRST and make a backup copy of the prefs by option-dragging it to your desktop (making a copy there). Open the prefs file in a text editor (like textwrangler), do a search for "custom" and the second hit (at least in my case) has a spot where you can change the custom X and Y from 5 & 5 to, say, 32 & 32. Good deal.
