Hey everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has heard of a free plugin for After Effects that reads motion vectors in the same way that Reel Smart Motion Blur performs.

Any and all help would be appreciated!!!

Thanks!

i'm not in front of ae right now, but i think that timewarp (free with ae as of cs3, version 8) can use motion vectors, and if you set the speed to 100 and enable motion blur it will try to add motion blur the the footage similar to rsmb (though not as good imho).

you can get documentation on timewarp from the manual which will reference the maunal for kronos (the foundry effect that timewarp is based on).

Wow, this looks really interesting!

I'll be sure to check it out!

Any other thoughts, anyone?

Hey Kevin,
Perhaps you can answer this question:

When inputting my motion vectors to the "Warp Layer" attribute of the Timewarp effect, the vectors are having an influence, but they are also showing up in the RGB channels of the final output image. I have the Timewarp effect applied to the beauty pass of a 3D render, but the RGB of the beauty pass is being overrode by the vectors pass for some strange reason...

Thoughts?

i actually have never used the motion vectors in timewarp, i just thought i had seen them in there before...

is the documentation on the kronos effect any help? i don't see any reason why the motion vector would get overlayed on the footage in anyway (i guess i don't see any benefit to having that as an option, so i don't know why it would do that)...

The Kronos manual was helpful, but it talked in broad terms about the software; it never really said, "to achieve RSMB-like effects, do this" (which was expected). It was, however, good to learn more about its potential. I'm sure with some more tweaking, I'll be able to get something half-decent.

I'm still open to ideas, though, if anyone else wants to chime in.

PS - for anyone else viewing this forum, the Kronos manual can be found under "User Guide" here: http://www.thefoundry.co.uk/pkg_overview.aspx?ui=B9D69803-AA9A-4772-B784-38...

"To achieve a result similar to the result of ReelSmart Motion Blur, apply the Timewarp effect, set Speed to 100, enable motion blur within the effect, and use the manual shutter control features to adjust the motion blur."

(from "Motion blur" page of After Effects Help)

Thanks for pointing that out, Todd. I was referring to the kronos manual in the post that you quoted. While Kevin's advice was extremely helpful, it required a little tuning beyond his recommendation, hence why I was looking for a little more direction from the kronos documentation.

Thanks everyone for all of your help!
