Import numbered image sequence, want to export same numbering
by Arvin Bautista on Jul 1, 2009 at 2:17:35 am

I was given an entire movie's video as one super long cineon sequence (yikes, gigantic files), when I only needed to work on specific sequences.

I saved myself the headache by taking chunks of the sequence I needed to work on and pasted them into their own folders. So in one folder might contain all the files from movie_(20100).dpx to movie_(25112).dpx.

I want to be able to render these out of AE as the same exact cineon sequence, with the same exact numbers. So if I created a sequence using movie_20100 to 25112, the cineon sequence I export also has numbers starting at 20100 and ending at 25112.

How do I go about doing that? I don't have much time to experiment, and my clients need this to be as brainless as possible; they basically want to be able to overwrite what they gave me with what I give them, and have it line up and sync perfectly.

If I understand correctly you might just make the process simpler by going into each composition settings and changing the start frame value to the number you intend that sequence to start from.
When you come to render you can use the option to use the frame numbers from the compositon. I think this might help you a little.

What has already been suggested sounds good.

Another option (if that doesn't work out) is to simply rename the files after rendering. This could be a bit of a pain if you need to keep revising the renders you are doing, but if you keep working until you are happy and then just need to deliver the final files, you COULD just rename them at the end. There are batch renaming techniques for both Mac and PC (on Mac, look into Automator, which is very useful for this).

But I agree it would be best to address it from within AE so you don't need to add the extra step and chase which files pertain to which sequence, and so on.

Yeah, I'd rather not have to learn a renaming program, but that did enter my mind.

As a really noobish question, can you guys tell me how to change the starting timecode/frame number? That sounds like the absolute best approach.

You will need to goto the COMPOSITION SETTINGS for the comp you wish to change.
Either right click the comp and select the option from the footage panel
Or when you have the comp open and selected press ctrl K or mac equivelent (or the menu composition - composition setting)

Near the bottom of the window that open will be a box often overlooked that says start frame, you can change it here.

Hope this is accurate I'm doing it from memory.
