What to do when AE just won't render?
by Fabio de la Rocha on Jun 26, 2009 at 9:12:50 pm

Hi,

I'm having terrible trouble rendering out a comp I've just spent two days creating.

It's a 1080p sequence, nothing too radical, all images under 2000x2000, some particle stuff going on. I've been trying to output the thing for the last eight hours and keep encountering two errors; the usual "unable to allocate space for a blah x blah image buffer" nonsense for which I've followed the usual advice, and also the following error:

"After Effects: not enough memory to create memory for blurring"

I've already gone through the labour intensive process of shrinking all jpgs etc and rebuilding comps, but I I still periodically get the error (I say periodically - it's a gamble which gets me first, "unable to allocate space for a blah x blah image buffer" or "blurred memories".

By the way, it seems that the "unable to allocate space" error is linked to my Trapcode Particular layers as it occurs on the same frame they begin. There are four particle layers, two principle and two mimicking shadows. I'm using a small, custom particle which is animated.

First person to help me solve my problem will recieve a pint of beer.

Fab.

Try prerendering your trapcode particular layers.

That's a great idea. Mind if I ask for some advice though - I take it it's not as simple as just creating proxies. If I understand correctly, rendering out a proxy is a means of creating working files. When you go to render the final comp AE will re-render those files you've created proxies for. Am I corrrect?

Therefore I'll need to disable the other layers in my comp. However, as I mentioned earlier, two of the four Particular layer are psuedo-shadows. How do I set the comp up so that when I re-import the rendered file it will retain transparency etc?

Thanks for your answer, really appreciate you taking the time.

The blurring error can be a result of any of the following, listed in most to least likely culprit (in my experience):

-Lights casting shadows with shadow diffusion at a large percentage.
-Camera depth of field.
-Large complicated blurs (i've never actually seen the error using standard blur effects, but i assume it can happen).

Also, I suggest that you enable "Show Rendering Progress in Info Panel and Flowchart" in the 'Display' section of your preferences. Then RAM preview with the Info panel visible and make note of any layers that AE spends a long time on. Then consider reducing their impact on the memory overhead by any of the following: reducing size, simplifying effects, pre-rendering.

If you want some more ideas you can produce a report of effects used in your project by going to File > Collect Files... and selecting 'Generate Report Only' and then uploading that here.

This thread talks about it. Basically you precomp your layer then in that new composition choose Composition>Pre-Render

Adobe's help documents also talk about it.
