AE cs3 mov goes offline and then Ae crashes

I Am running a Intel mac pro with leopard duel quad cores and 9megs of ram. I just reinstalled the os and AE cs3 to try and fix this problem. to no avail.
When I am working on a project and get a bit into it. once I save and close Ae, I go to reopen the project file and opens fine. But! the mov's will look disconnected. like the file was moved. if I play with anything or try to relocate the file. Ae crashes. no error messages just freezes.
I thought it might be some bad ram and took out two 512 cards. suddenly old files that this problem happened to suddenly worked! yay I thought. now it's doing the same thing about a day later. I also tried cooling of my whole system and seeing if it would work before getting hot. nope! can anyone help?
