Image Projected Onto Glass Effect
by Cuitla Huezo on Jun 24, 2009 at 7:00:06 pm

Hi there. This is my first time posting, and before I do I'd like to thank all you wonderful people for letting us pick your brains for information!

I'd like to create an effect like a hologram of a person projected onto a pane of glass. The effect I'm going for is much like the one used in the movie The Time Machine (2002). It can be seen here at 18 seconds in: http://www.comcast.net/video/the-time-machine/606385160/

I think I figured out how, in theory, to do it, but I'd rather get a knowledgable person's opinion before I jump into it. I'm specifically having trouble giving depth to a 2d image. I mean, I can easily manipulate the footage to look like a surface, but that surface is only 2D -- I'd like it to have a little depth to look more like a thick slab of material.

I'm using AE CS3 by the way.

Thanks again for your time!
Cuitla

I don't know if the example you give is an example of a 3D effect. I think it is the result of careful planning and very precise shooting, combined with very good use of masks.

I get what you're saying.

Still, if a make a plain old solid (in AE, of course) how can I give that 2D solid some 3D depth?

Thanks,
Cuitla

By making some other solids and putting them on the side. Like making a box - a really thin box.

And there's always Zaxwerks or several other similar plugins.

it looks like all they did was make a 2d animation, precomp it, duplicate the precomp, and make the two duplicate comps 3d layers. then you could just parent 1 to the other and voila oh yea and you might wanna make the one in back more transparent. oh and one last thing, you wanna set use a luma matte for the whole end result so that the glass highlights stay intact a bit. play with the transparency of that matte.
