If this done in Real Life or After Effects?
by Luis Santiago on Jun 6, 2009 at 7:25:46 am

Hello, there is one effect that i just can't figure out if its Real life, on set effect. or if its done in After Effects (or simular post production software)

Tokusatsu Films, Such as Ultraman, Power Rangers, Masked Rider, VR Troopers, use a effect that when one armer fighter hits the other, Sparks and smoke fly off. I have seen this many times, sometimes it looks like something that could be done in After Effects, other times it looks like something done in real life.

For rabit punches from diffrent angles, it seems like you could not do it in after effects with out alot of masking, and these shows have low production cost and time, anyone have any idea how to get this done?

Yes.
Yes.
Yes.

Practical, on-site effects take great effort to do well and are often enhanced with computer generated graphics and After Effects is one of many applications up to the task.

If you are planning on trying to do yourself you will need to master motion tracking and the creation of particle effects such as smoke, sparks, and flames.

When shooting on the set, you plan your shot angles very carefully to make it easy for the effects to be added. This usually means you try not to require too much in the way of hand rotoscoping. You also might want to incorporate color targets for motion tracking into the costumes.

Practical lighting effects help sell the CG stuff that you add later. Flashes of colored light and atmospheric smoke are far easier to have on your film/tape than trying to add them later artificially. But this is very advanced filmmaking even if the film is Saturday morning fare.
