Import File Dialogue Box
by erin patrick on May 27, 2009 at 7:21:45 pm

Does anyone know of a plugin or a script that will show image sequences as one collapsed unit in the "Import File" dialogue box (as opposed to separate files), similar to other software?

Thanks for any input.

You must have imported the files incorrectly, because AE does indeed show image sequences as a single piece of footage in the project window.

Actually no, I'm not talking about the project window. I'm talking about the "Import File" dialogue box. When you select "Import File/Multiple Files", the thing that pops up for you to browse for your file.

Go to the folder containing the image sequence. Highlight the first file of the sequence. Click on the check box that says "Open As Image Sequence" or something like that. Done.

No, I'm not having any trouble with importing or anything - I'm just tired of looking at 3000 files and trying to find the right sequence in AE when I can see them as separate sequences in other software. I thought someone might be able to point me to a plugin that worked this out.

Thanks anyway for the response.

[erin patrick] "...I'm just tired of looking at 3000 files and trying to find the right sequence in AE.."

You have three THOUSAND different image sequences, displayed as three THOUSAND image sequence icons, in a single AE Project? That's a whole lot of footage, no matter how you slice it!

You'd have the same problems with three thousand pieces of ANY kind of footage -- it isn't limited just to image sequences.

Hmmm.... wait a minute.... it occurs to me that may also be saying that you have various image sequences -- about 3000 total image files -- but these sequences are all in one folder, and you're having difficulty finding the first image of a given sequence.

If that's the case, it's simply a matter of lousy organization on your part. Each image sequence should be in its own separate folder. I deal with image sequences all the time in my station's graphics package from Hothaus Graphics, a well-known broadcast design outfit. That's how they keep things straight.

Yeah, but if they were displayed as separate sequences, there wouldn't be 3 THOUSAND of them to look at.

True. But if you want to work efficiently in AE, you'd better get used to the concept of storing one image sequence per folder.

All I know is that big broadcast design outfits -- who have access to Smokes, Flames, Infernos and all the highly-expensive pieces of hardware -- have standardized on this method of image sequence storage. If they've found it useful, I think I might, too. It's certainly more useful than demanding that a piece of software be developed to compensate for my lack of organizational skills.
