Bug in CS4? renders fills Machintosh HD disk with unknown temp files

Hi there,
firstly apologies if this is elsewhere but pretty tricky to search for this problem in forums.
I have enable disk cache switched off in preferences and media cache pointing to other disks.
Can someone shed some light on why when i render to a different disk, that my OS X operating disk still fills up with GBs of temporary files, until after effects comes to a grinding hault.
The annoying thing is that searching for newly created files doesn't show up and i don't know what file types are being created or where they are being created.

I just have to ask, since I've seen this mistake made before...
Are you certain that you've relocated the actual media cache to a different disk, as opposed to just relocating the media cache _database_ to a different disk?
(I've seen a couple of instances of someone setting one of these when they meant to set the other.)

Thanks for the quick response.
I'm looking at the After Effects Preferences- Media & Disk Cache tab
I've disabled the Disk Cache
I've set the Conformed Media Cache Database location and the Cache location underneath it to secondary disks. is that what you meant? Am I missing something?
Where on the OS X startup disk does it normally store the cache ? I'd be quite happy to reset my preferences to default if I knew how.
