The AE that comes with CS3 is, well, AE CS3.

(technically that's AE8)

Unless you KNOW someone who still has a trial version of AE8 -- and I certainly don't -- you may be out of luck. You won't find one at the Adobe web site, because Adobe likes to sell it's NEW products, y'know?

You'll probably have to do what I'd have to do: search the web for someplace that has the AE8 tryout squirreled away. Good luck.

Yes. And some small differences, too.

Here's a list of the UI changes from After Effects CS3 to After Effects CS4.

Here's a list of the new and changed features from After Effects CS3 to After Effects CS4.

Regarding the naming... We find that it's easier to use the "CS4" name to make it clear that certain cross-application features (like Dynamic Link) are in synch between two applications. Most people wouldn't remember that After Effects 9 works with Premiere Pro 4. But since they're both "CS4", it's easier. That said, we still use the numbers in a lot of places where that is what would communicate more clearly.

(No, I'm not in the branding department, and none of this is my fault.)

I heard a lot of people are moving back to CS3 because CS4 has a lot of bugs, is this true. I ant to buy CS4 but AE only runs on multicore Intel, I have a G5 Power Mac, so looking to get CS3. Just doing some research and if anyone has any tips please let me know. thanks

[Simon Bonner] "...AE that comes with CS3 is, well, AE CS3...."

Yeah, well that may be, but I'm none too happy about the fact that Adobe went ad renamed it... OR DID THEY? Check out the splash screen the next time you fire up AE and tell me what you see.

In any case, the current version is still AE 9, and I will always call it AE 9. I don't give a rodent's rear end what Adobe thinks about that.

If people are backing off to CS3 it's probably because it is still on their system. When you install CS4 it doesn't overwrite CS3. You can't buy CS3 new anymore.

Several bugs were fixed in an update.

There's another update coming very, very soon that addresses some more bugs and adds support for some new equipment (like the Core i7 processors).

Yes, I'm biased. But I do use After Effects CS4 for my personal projects, too. I greatly prefer it to After Effects CS3, which I of course have easy access to.
