how to PEEL off an image of a sphere, please??
by Artep Hurmannova on May 21, 2009 at 1:51:04 pm

Hi I need to make this animation - peeling an earth map off the actual earth globe. For the globe I used a classic earth texture with an applied CC Sphere effect and I used the same nonprocessed texture for the map - I masked out the parts that remain "glued" on the globe and moved the unmasked jpg to the right until it was all rolled out. But it looks kind of lame and not really peeling off the globe itself.. does anybody know how to solve it? thanks in advance..

I think to get what you're looking for a true 3d app is going to be your only way to get it. There are a couple of ways you could fake it in AE, but none of them are going to look that good. Although, now that I think about it, in a true 3d app the globe's texture wouldn't necessarily work that well either. Nah, I still think it'll be better.

You could try pushing in to the globe then fade into a regular layer that's got a distorted bulge-type effect.

Oooh, oooh, or try bezier warp to make a globe and then unfurl it...might work.

Sorry, but this sounds like a task best accomplished -- and probably ONLY accomplished -- in a 3D application. In my opinion, AE just won't be able to deliver for you in this case.

Bris 3D filters have a keyframable wrap function. However, it only rolls or unrolls the image from the sphere or cylinder. You still have to figure out how to get it to appear to peel.

Thanks a lot for helping me, I'll follow your advices and at least I've got an excuse it cannot be really done in AAE... thanks again.
