In After Effects I cannot use CC Particle world anymore. Every time I try to apply it After Effects crashes. I just installed CS4 on my new Mac Pro and it just won't let me use it. Any thoughts on how to fix this. I have tried repairing the install but it still does not work.

i'm not sure if cc particle world tries to use opengl for accelerated previews, but you might try disabling opengl in preferences>previews. just uncheck the use opengl option and set accelerate previews to adaptive resolution.
this should prevent effects from accessing opengl which often helps preview/render problems in ae. also, disabling opengl for previews will allow multiprocessing for previews which is normally of greater value to more effects than opengl.
Re: CC Particle World Keeps Crashing by Kevin Camp on Mar 19, 2009 at 9:58:34 pm
i leave opengl disabled... i've found that most of the benefits are lost once you encounter stability problems. throw in the fact that if it is enabled, it will disable multiprocessing for previews and it's pretty easy for me to leave it off....
i'm using a dual 2.8 quad mac pro with cs4 too, and i'm not having any trouble with particle world... you're using the version that ships with ae (vs. the version that can be purchased form cycore)?
have you tried a different comp size? just curious if it might work with an sd comp vs an hd comp....
have you tried enabling or disabling multiprocessing? preferences>memory & multiprocessing, check the option for render multiple frames simultaneously... i have mp on here (again, with no problems).
also, do you have the latest version of cs4? there is an update to 9.0.1 that fixed many bugs... (i'm currently running with the update)
Re: CC Particle World Keeps Crashing by Lucas Windsor on Mar 20, 2009 at 2:55:21 am
I am running without the updates. I will download those and see if that helps. I don't make any comps in HD. We don't do HD out yet as its not quite yet worth it for what we are doing.
Re: CC Particle World Keeps Crashing by Lucas Windsor on Mar 20, 2009 at 3:37:37 am
I installed the update and I still have the same issue. I changed all the settings like you said. Tried many variations, but nothing seems to work. I guess I better just buy Trapcode.

Lucas,
Please also report any issues directly to us at support@cycorefx.com. It will make easier for us to fix them and in shorter time. It will be pretty difficult for us if we have to scan all forums on daily basis to find bugs.
Two things you can try.
• If you have re-installed/upgraded AE you good tip is to delete the AE pref files. Launch AE while holding shift-cmd-option(alt) and you will be asked to delete or go to ~/user/Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/9.0 and delete manually.
• Delete "Particle World prefs" from ~/user/Library/Preferences/ manually.

Nils, thanks for monitoring the forum. Wish more mfrs and publishers of plugs would do that.
Hope you can help this guy.
Particle World rocks! (but i miss those obsolete old particle filters, too)
Re: CC Particle World Keeps Crashing by Nils Schneider on Mar 20, 2009 at 5:18:46 pm
David,
Thanks for the kind words.
You can actually get to the old particle systems by creating a preset. To make that easier for you we've made two preset "Classic Particle Systems FFX" that you can download here, http://www.cycorefx.com/dloads_ccfx.php. Put them in your presets folder and you can apply those to any layer, it's "almost" like a standard plug-in ;-)

I tried what you said and it did not work. Its weird because none of the other ones have that problem. Is there anyway to download a new version of the plugin?
Re: CC Particle World Keeps Crashing by Steve Dunnington on Mar 21, 2009 at 5:57:58 pm
Hi,
I'm having the same problem and its on one of brand new mac pro's as well. Every time I apply the CC Particle World to a solid CS3 and CS4 crashes. I've also tried it with a wide range of different settings however still no luck.
ALSO...
Im having a problem with AE CS3 not allowing me to check the OpenGL acceleration in the previews preferences, every time I check the box a message window saying the follow appears.
"OpenGL acceleration is not currently supported on this version of Mac OS. Please go to adobe.com/....... etc..."
I made sure I had all the updates and still no luck which made me think perhaps its due to the new mac pros not being designed to work with CS3. I installed the 30 day trial of AE CS4 and this time open GL did work. This still however doesn't explain my problem with using the CC Particle Effect though...
Any ideas of why both these problems might be happening??
Re: CC Particle World Keeps Crashing by Lucas Windsor on Mar 21, 2009 at 6:03:55 pm
I sent a copy of the plugin to the company who made it, so hopefully they can figure out the problem with it. If they let me know anything I will let you know as well.
Re: CC Particle World Keeps Crashing by Steve Dunnington on Mar 21, 2009 at 6:43:57 pm
cheers,
I'm sure when they realize there are issues with the 2009 mac pro supporting pluggins they will have to sort out some sort of update. At the end of the day its unlikely that being so new they would even have one of the new Mac Pros within Cycore Effects for testing. Ill email them as well so they realize its a common problem. There doesnt seem to be anyone else talking about this yet so its possible were within the first few to find it. I feel congratulations are in order...

Hey guys,
I am having the same problem, as well. I just got the new mac pro nehalem- 2.66ghz dual quad core and installed adobe cs4 production premium. every time i try to use cc particle world in a comp on after effects - i get this:
I have reinstalled, done the update and even called adobe. I am waiting to hear back from adobe on this. i think it is such a new problem they didn't even know about it. the tech guy was actually checking creative cow for a solution while i was on the phone with him!
KINDA WIERD: I also had this same crash error when I downloaded some projects from videocopilot.net and tried to load them into AE and all plug-ins attached to the project crashed. For example: I downloaded tutorial project #66. "3d Sparks Title" and then clicked on it and it opened up in AE and it needed to convert, then I had the same AE plug-in crash error for CC particle world, exposure, and glow, respectively. Oddly enough, when I just go into a new comp and apply exposure and glow to a solid layer without cc particle world it works just fine.

Could I get the hardware specs of everyone having this problem?
CPU, (manufacturer/model/clockspeed) RAM, and Video card... (and video driver version if anyone is anyone is seeing this issue on the windows side...)

Same problem here. I have a new Mac Pro. Using AE CS4 and Cycore HD.
Particle World keeps crashing AE.
Model Name: Mac Pro
Model Identifier: MacPro4,1
Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2.26 GHz
Number Of Processors: 2
Total Number Of Cores: 8
Memory: 16 GB
Processor Interconnect Speed: 5.86 GT/s
I have a project I constantly make different versions of which relies heavily on Particle World. I'm kinda screwed right now. Any news?
Re: CC Particle World Keeps Crashing by Roger Rohatgi on Apr 24, 2009 at 3:43:12 pm
Hi John,
Adobe contacted me to let me know they are working on an update. It could take months. Currently the i7 (nehalem) architecture is not supported by them yet - according to their engineers. I have also done several tests using "dummy" particle world plug-ins sent to me by Nils at Cycore to give them feedback because they currently do not have their own nehalem to test on. Hopefully, this feedback has given them enough info to create a fix. In the meantime, I am using Trapcode Particular. It seems to work fine so far.
Re: CC Particle World Keeps Crashing by David Kudell on May 27, 2009 at 7:31:24 pm
I'm also having the issue. Trying to figure out how to open old projects that already have CC Particle World in them. Wish there was a way to substitute plug-ins so that it wouldn't crash immediately.
Re: CC Particle World Keeps Crashing by Lucas Windsor on Apr 28, 2009 at 2:59:22 pm
They are working on a patch. I would recommend getting Trapcode Particular. Its actually a much more powerful particle generator then particle world. It is a bit pricey for just doing particles, but its the best product on the market and a patch may be at least 4-6 months away.
Re: CC Particle World Keeps Crashing by David Teixeira on Jul 13, 2009 at 7:09:03 pm
Has anyone had any success in finding a way around this?
Adobe seems to just give me the run around.
I have always been a happy Adobe user but this one is ridiculous!
Quote from Adobe:
"Adobe is not responsible for third-party plug-ins, like CC Particle
World, even if they are included in the installation of After Effects."
Re: CC Particle World Keeps Crashing by Karl-Jason Mawdsley on Sep 2, 2009 at 9:25:55 am
Done a bit of research into this - apparently the fault is due to Hyper-threading technology which allows your computer to sue different parts of your processors to perform different tasks.
If you switch it off you can use CC Particle World in After Effects CS3 - no upgrades or anything.
A guy has created a little app that allows you to switch hyper-threading technology on and off whenever you want. I've been using it for a day now and it works fantastically.
Re: CC Particle World Keeps Crashing by Damian Da Silva on Sep 8, 2009 at 1:18:38 am
Hi Karl,
Does the Hyper-threading trick work with CS4 as well, and if so, is there another way of turning it off without the app that you suggested, as it doesn't seem to work on my mac PRO.
Re: CC Particle World Keeps Crashing by Saty Mahajan on Sep 8, 2009 at 5:44:01 am
Here's my original post (on Adobe's forums) that Karl was talking about. You can turn off HT one of the following ways. Sorry the app isn't working for you Damian. Are you running a 2009 Mac Pro (i.e. Nehalem?)
<--- QUOTE
The problem is hyperthreading. If you disable hyperthreading AE CS3 will function normally. There are a few ways you can disable hyperthreading.
1. Through the processor preference pane (included with Xcode).
2. Type this into terminal (without the quotes): "hwprefs cpu_ht=false".
3. Build an applescript application (so you can keep it on the dock): Do a spotlight search for "AppleScript Editor". Launch the editor and put the following line of code in there and save it as an application: do shell script "hwprefs cpu_ht=false"
4. Or just download this little AppleScript application that I wrote that help you turn on/off hyperthreading: http://www.satymahajan.com/changeht
Please note that if your computer sleeps, hyperthreading will be enabled on wake up, so you'll have to disable it again. Other than that, I've tested this on both Leopard and Snow Leopard and it works. Good luck!
Re: CC Particle World Keeps Crashing by Karl-Jason Mawdsley on Sep 8, 2009 at 7:50:09 am
Not sure if it works with CS4 because as far as I know the issue has been resolved.
Anyhoo, there are a few things you can try. All the app does is to run a few lines of code in terminal so you can do it manually if you want...
Just type this:
hwprefs cpu_ht=false
and that should disable it - if you want to re-enable it then type:
hwprefs cpu_ht=true
or restart your computer.
I am also on a mac pro and it works on mine. Is it a 2009 tower? This trick only works on computers with the Nehalem architecture you see....
Re: CC Particle World Keeps Crashing by Roger Rohatgi on Sep 8, 2009 at 3:30:06 pm
CC Particle World on After Effects CS4 on my Nehalem has been working great thanks to the fix by Cycore.
However, I just wanted to know if anyone that has moved to Snow Leopard has had any problems with After Effects CS4 or any other software using a quad or dual-quad Nehalem mac pro.
I am in the middle of some major projects for clients and I am reluctant to make the jump.
Re: CC Particle World Keeps Crashing by Jake Scott on Sep 8, 2009 at 4:44:44 pm
What Cycore fix are you speaking of? Is it a free download or something? I am still having this problem and I really don't want to shell out $400 for Particular 2 at this time.
Re: CC Particle World Keeps Crashing by Roger Rohatgi on Sep 30, 2009 at 2:35:40 pm
Hi Peter. Yes, that should do the trick - but you could email Cycore and ask them to just make sure. They are very nice people. I have been using it since it released and have had no problems.
Re: CC Particle World Keeps Crashing by Chris McDowell on Oct 23, 2009 at 8:28:18 pm
Ugh... I had this same problem. CC Particle World is the only effect that would cause a crash. I downloaded this update and now the Green X of death comes up for every single cc effect I use. I'd rather have one effect not working than all of them now with an X. Tried to solve one problem by causing a ton more. Any solutions?
