Creating a character out of paper pieces
by Bruce Benamran on Feb 4, 2009 at 2:10:58 pm

Hi,

i'd like to have a character made of paper pieces (with an id photo for the head); it's for a deam sequence.

my idea is having pieces of paper for :
- one for the torso
- two for the arms and hands
- two for the legs and feet
- a photo for the head

i'd like to animate it then.

i thought of the puppet tool to do that, but each time i try to use the puppet tool, it distorts the pieces of paper instead of simply moving them.

So here's my question :
should i be using the puppet tool to do that, of should i animate the layers separately, having cleverly set the anchor points (at shoulders and hips) and having parented everything to the torso ?

Hey man.

I would go your second rout by setting the anchor points and parenting everything to the torso and animating each part individually.

I use that style a lot for my cartoons. See some examples here. http://vimeo.com/1988217

and if you have any questions feel free to ask.

Alternatively you can modify that workflow slightly and implement inverse kinematics. This will allow you to animate one layer and the others will follow along.

Thanks, i saw your demo and that's really the kind of effect i'm looking for...

i guess, then, that i'll go with anchors and parenting, and then precomp the animation in a layer...

Thanks
