Problem with After Effects renders in FCP
by Timothy Ford on Jan 30, 2009 at 4:07:44 pm

I'm hoping someone can help me find a solution to the following problem:

Whenever I render a clip out through After Effects and try bringing into a Final Cut Pro sequence, the result is always very low-res. There's lots of aliasing on text and the whole thing just looks like garbage.

I've tried multiple variations on the render settings, but it's always the same result, even when exported from Final Cut as QT files. The clips coming from AE look fine when played with Quicktime and when dropped into other NLE's. I'm sure this is an issue with FCP, but I figured this was the place to post since I'd have a better chance of finding an AE user that has encountered the same issue.

Anyone have a solution? Suggestion?

How do the renders look right out of AE?

First thing: don't export, render using the render queue.

Second thing: before you create a new file in AE, make sure the comp window is set to full resolution and 100% size. I bet you had it set to half resolution and 50%.

if the file is OK everywhere except in FCP,
you should post in the FCP-forum also.

What codec are you using ?
tried another one ?

If the file plays well in QT Player and plays well in the FCP Browser's viewer, then After Effects is creating a file you can use. You have not indicated the comp settings or the render settings out of AE nor have you inidcated the sequence settings in FCP.

If the file is good out of AE, then your render controls are set improperly in FCP. See the prefs options.

FCP is a liitle bit of pussy whenever it comes to file formats and settings.
For instance, if you work with an Uncompressed 8 Bit easy setup in FC your render output codec in AE should be the same. Long Story short: alsways use native FC codecs.

good to check: if you work with interlaced footage in FC and you render out motion graphics from AE, take a look in the render settings, usually default is set to "best", sometimes, but just sometimes you also may check "field rendering"(default is off), it comes in handy whenever you're using interlaced video together with animation.
inportant is to know interpreting interlaced footage fields OFF before you start compositing in AE.

and by the way, rendering you work completely in FC ist a good way to go, also canvas/viewer in FC set to any percentage than 100% wil degrade your preview - means, having a control monitor TV for previewing is crucial for video editing, otherwise you'll never have control over your final output.

cheers
