Rendering to Quicktime with Alpha and millions + But bg still black instead of transparent!
by Madiha Mirza on Dec 22, 2008 at 3:47:27 am

Hi guys,

I have been searching the forum for ways to make the bg transparent when exporting to quicktime. And I have tried everything including the "RGB + ALPHA" channel and "MILLIONS OF COLORS +" but everytime it exports the bg is still black! I dont know what I am doing wrong because in AE i see the bg as transparent!

In AE i have just ONE file, it is a quicktime movie that I created in AE but then rendered and re-imported it in a new project. So I have only ONE layer and that is the movie with the transparent bg.

Please if someone can give me a hand. It would be great.

Thanks.

Are you putting this movie into another application to see it with the transparency or just looking at it in quicktime?

In AE, it will import in with the alpha. In Final Cut Pro, you might need to select the clip then select Modify and tell FCP to turn the alpha channel on.

Hello, thanks for the response.

Actually after I render it in quicktime, I am just viewing it in Quicktime to see if the transparency is there. But the bg is still black. I am not using FCP or any other program.

I am rendering it in quicktime because of the fact that I can make it transparent and then later on convert it into an swf so that I can put it online.

I'm sorry i am new at AE. Am I doing something wrong?

Basically to give you a visual. I made a banner for my website, but the banner is not a rectangle, it is in a rounded rectangle. So the corners are rounded.

Thats why I need the background behind the corners to be transparent and I did that by adding a mask in AE, but when rendering it, the mask is black.

I have tried this for two days now with no luck.

Thanks to all who respond!!

Cheers.

[Madiha Mirza] "...I am just viewing it in Quicktime to see if the transparency is there. But the bg is still black. I am not using FCP or any other program...."

Make a temporary AE project. Import the footage you just rendered. See if it has an alpha channel on it. Done.

... because Quicktime Player doesn't "see" transparency.

Hello,

Thanks for the responses, I am probably really dense, but I dont know how to check to see if there is an alpha channel on my quicktime movie. I went on google and did a search and it was giving me the same answers (RGB+ALPHA and A MILLION +)..

I see the transparency in after effects so how do I export it so that i can see it in quicktime/flash or any other video player. I want to embed it into my html src and I tried to do that just now, but i still get the black bg...

Sorry guys, I hope u can help me...

thanks.

If you see transparency in After Effects you've rendered correctly. QuickTime cannot display transparency nor can FLV files.

What exactly do you want to see behind your rendered QT? Composite it in After Effects or your NLE and render that out.

My QT is in a rectangle with rounded corners. I want to add this to my website as a header with rounded corners. So the bg has to be transparent so that the website bg can show through the header. I have seen it done on almost every site! I didnt know it was this difficult to create a swf or something that is compatible for the web that is not in the regular rectangular shape but rather a rounded rectangle shape.

Please help me out, i think i am definately missing some key info...

Here is a link to what I want the QT or SWF that I rendered from AE to be inside of with the rounded corners. http://www.slideshowcreation.ca/header_problem.html

Thanks.

Hey guys,

Im so dumb, I got it now lol. Basically I imported the qt movie into flash cs3 and then created a mask.

It was that simple i knew it! Thanks though for all your help.

Cheers!
