Photoshop 3d layers in ae cs4
by Anthony Thomas on Dec 12, 2008 at 7:54:53 pm

The CS4 version of aftereffects hardly brings as much to the product as CS3 did. So far there is only one new effect, the cartoon effect, and the ability to process photoshop 3d layers. I understand that aftereffect's light and shadow effects do not process photoshop 3d layers as 3d layers created in aftereffects. Is this so?

This is second-hand information because I still have AE8, but I hear that AE9 is pretty darned buggy. In my mind that means it could be worth waiting for a .1 version.

The 3d is done by using a null object to move your 3d model. So the model itself is not a 3d layer. Lights and shadows do not do anything to the model. You can make the model layer a 3d layer but lights will only see it as a flat 2d image.

It's a great new feature and is really a giant step towards what your looking for it to do. It's not quite there yet though.

As for how it runs. I have had no issues with stability on a os x.

I find the 3d import borderline useless, like said above, it doesn't interact with lights and shadows as a 3d layer. You have to animate a null that's expressed to control it. And on top of that motion blur doesn't work on them either(as far as I can tell).

So if you do a boujou track or bring in a 3d camera of any sort you still aren't going to get motion blur.

So sure, it's neat and a big step, I just don't know when or why I'd ever use it.
