Rendering visible light beams in 6.5?

Because I can't afford the Lux plug-in from Trapcode, I was wondering if anyone knew a way to achieve a similar look, but for free?

Or am I being overly optimistic?

You can use a radial blur set to zoom to achieve somewhat limited volumetric lighting. You can even use expressions to make them interactive in 3D space (again, somewhat limited).

There's a tutorial here that covers a lot of this:

Not necessarily the way I would do it, but it should give you a great starting place.

Thanks, I'm giving that a go now, I've learnt a couple of useful expressions from it already (always good to expand from loopout.Duration...). But, my light isn't casting a pool of light! Any ideas? The solid is set to accept lights... It's very odd, I've played with lights quite a lot and never had this problem. Anyone have any ideas?

It could potentially be an issue with your layer order, or you may have the Draft 3D comp switch enabled. I'm only guessing here though :)

Top to bottom;

Camera,
Light,
Null object (controlling light POI),
3D Black solid.

The 3D Draft button isn't selected...

I see now what the problem is. You can't expect to see light being cast on a pure black solid. A pure black object absorbs all light. Obviously there's no such thing as pure black in the real world, but in AE there is! Try using a white solid, or even importing a top down picture of a carpeted or tile floor.
