multiprocessing, yet large idle CPU %
by mike atwood on Nov 25, 2008 at 2:38:33 pm

Hello,

I have a dual quad core mac (DIMM 2x 1Gb) & AE cs2
I am monitoring my CPU usage in activity monitor, and over 70% is idle.
I have multiprocessing selected, but all signs are telling me that preference has to do with previewing.
Any help? What am I missing?

Do I need a stick of RAM for each processor?s

AE CS2 doesn't support multiprocessing
by mike atwood on Nov 25, 2008 at 6:21:32 pm

I found this posting: http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b54282

Says I need to upgrade to CS3 to utilize my awesome computer powers.
CS3 came out just a few months after I bought CS2.........
Where's the love?

Perhaps you'll be sad to hear CS4 was released last month.

...and the news may get a little worse, at least for the time being.

Apparently until Adobe gets the bugs worked out, AE9 doesn't really appear to be much of gotta-have next version. Wait for the .5 upgrade, I'd say.

if you don't want to upgrade you ae, for about $50 you can get nucleo that will give ae7 multiprocessing...

however, if you have a macpro, i'd upgrade to at least cs3 for native intel code rather than having to run ae7 under powerpc emulation (rosetta). note this may also involve updating/upgrading many third party plugins to be intel native too.

[Kevin Camp] "i'd upgrade to at least cs3 for native intel code rather than having to run ae7 under powerpc emulation (rosetta)."

I concur.
CS3 native vs AE7 under Rosetta makes a huge difference.
Before CS3 released, I was stuck working in Rosetta for months and it was miserable, constant crashes, slow operations, failing renders. CS3 was a godsend.

... and Adobe advises 2GB Ram/Core,
that makes 16GB Ram for your system !
