After Effects never finishes rendering... (not crashing though)
by Devin Earthman (inigomyeggo) on Nov 12, 2008 at 5:49:07 pm

So I've tried searching about this but it's a hard one to find since most posts are about system or program freezes...this is a little different.

I just got a brand new workstation PC that has gotten me all excited about working in my first full 1080p HD project. Performance-wise, previews etc. run great, but now I'm trying to render sections of my project (not even the whole thing) and after effects will take only 4 minutes or so to get to 99%, and just never finishes rendering or writing the movie file--I've even left it overnight. I've tried moving the render area, turning on/off nucleo pro, different movie formats (QT, WMV etc) and the only time I've gotten a completed render is making the render area half the length. This doesn't make sense since I have the memory to preview the whole comp and play back in realtime no problem, so it can't be a resource/performance issue?

Thanks a bunch this is making me crazy.

I bet you're using footage that's compressed in mpeg2, mpeg4, m2t or h.264. Despite Adobe propaganda to the contrary, you can't use it in AE. Before you import the footage into AE, you'll have to convert it to some type of lossless codec.

Actually, after a little process of elimination I was at a brand new project with an empty comp and it was still not finishing a render. So I disabled Nucleo again and that seems to be the problem, which I thought I had already tried disabling with the same result. So now it's working (but oh so slowly!). It's just strange I haven't had any problems with it lately, I wonder if it has to do with the HD resolution.
