What setting for Composition?
by Alex Cordiner on Nov 6, 2008 at 12:55:27 pm

I have done a few After Effect compositions for both HD and standard PAL DV. My question is that sometimes the renders (rendering at full quality) don't look quite as smooth as I would like and I am just wondering if it is because of the "original" composition settings? ie should I be choosing a higher quality original setting and then outputting the footage at a lower quality.

I am sure there might be something daft that I am missing so please be gentle in any replies :-)

Many thanks

Kind regards

Alex

This might be because, at lossless quality, most files are too large to be viewed without choppy playback. This is not necessarily a problem however, as final video will usually be compressed before delivery (e.g. converted to flv for web, or mpeg for dvd).

you can check to see if what simon says is true, by simply ram previewing (hit the zero on the numbers pad, not space bar). if the ram preview looks smooth, then the render will look smooth when you get it tot he final state, like mpeg-2 for dvd...

you could also render a test to a more compressed codec like dv, just too make sure the playout was smooth, but use the original lossless file when creating the dvd, or in your nle when putting your reel together...
