Multi-processor render crashes
by Richard Kratt on Oct 31, 2008 at 8:19:09 pm

I'm rendering a long (5750 frame) project on an 8 processor Mac with 16 gigs of ram running Windows 64 with AE CS3. I have multi-processor rendering turned on but I can't get through a render without a crash.

Does someone have an idea what is causing this?

Thanks,

Rich

what's the format of the drive that you are rendering to? if it is fat32, then i think you have a single file size limit of around 2-3gb... if your 5750 frame project is rendered as uncompressed sd, that's a 5.75gb file, so that may be the issue... particularly if it is crashing at about the same point each time...

Thanks for your reply Kevin. I must confess I do not know if the format is fat32 as I'm new to this workstation. I will say that when disabling multi-processing in the preferences the project renders all the way through. And when attempting to render with multi-processors it crashed as early as from 1600 one time and as late as 5100 in another.

fat32 would be a fairly common format for a drive that needed to be accessed by both mac and windows... since you are running windows on a mac, it seems possible that the drive may be formatted that way to allow it to be used by either os... (also, max file size is 4gb... makes sense, 32-bit addressing would be 4gb....)

but since the crashes are a very different points, it's likely that there is another problem... there was a fix in the 8.0.2 update for machines with more than 4 cores, so make sure you are running v8.0.2.

even with 8.0.2, i have had a few projects that have had to be rendered with multiprocessing turned off... they were older projects (like v6 or 7) that were rather complex... i had originally blamed third party effects, but it could have been ae itself...

you might try decreasing the max ram cache settings a bit (preferences>memory and cache), the default is 60%, you might try 35% or so just to see if it may be a ram fragmentation issue or something.

also, there is a forum here for running windows on mac, you might post there too... they may have some good input.

It might also be that the machine has Open GL enabled for rendering, which could also create problems.
