i got some .ai and .eps files from someone else and i'm animating them in AE. they look fine when i open them with AI or preview, but whenever i import them into AE, they are squished horizontally. do i have some settings wrong in my composition or something?

It sounds like you might need to toggle the pixel aspect ratio correction button. It's situated towards the bottom right of the comp panel and looks like a rectangle with an arrow on top. If you're working on a non-square pixel comp, toggling the button off will show you the comp in square pixels and toggling it on will show you the comp in non-square pixels - how it will appear on a tv.
If this doesn't solve the issue, please describe what kind of comp you're working on - hit ctrl+k to show the settings.

actually, i think i just changed the viewer. i exported a movie and the files are still squished up. my pixel aspect ratio is set at HDV 1080/DVCPRO HD 720 (1.33) - Frame Aspect Ratio: 2:1

This may not be an issue for you, but remember that footage that is supposed to be non-square pixels (e.g. PAL standard def' 720x576) will look squashed if opened in QT because the QT player just displays everything as square pixels. Only set the comp to square pixels if it will be delivered that way, otherwise you're rendering extra pixels to bump up the comp size to the proper aspect ratio. Hope that made sense...

Pixel aspect ratio.
See the manual and online help system. They created their AI files for print using square pixels. Your video pixels are rectangular. There are two things that can go wrong because you can tell AE to correct the display without changing the file or you can tell AE to do both or neither.
This pixel stuff is NOT easy. Messes me up every single day. I push random buttons till i get what I think I want.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: "For crying out loud, read the freakin' manual."
