How can I convert a dv compostion to a hdv composition?
by mark davis (marksd2167) on Oct 24, 2008 at 11:18:58 pm

I have a project I did with the DV NTSC widescreen settings (compositions settings) Now I need to do the same project but with the HDV 1080 composition settings. Everything in the composition is made up of text, particals and one logo.
Is there a easy way to convert the project to HDV 1080?
Thanks for any help you can give.

A comes with a Javascript that scals your layrs to fit a new comp size. You'll find this script within AE's main folder.

Since there isn't a raster image (hopefully your logo is vector), you use the script to scle up your layers with no adverse side effects.

Roland, thanks for the response, but I have no Idea how to implement the JavaScript to make the changes I need. Can you give a simple step 1, 2, 3. I do appreciate it very much. Thanks.

No worries Mark. First thing to take note of the following -
A) You currently have a 16:9 comp square pixels
B) You want to end up with a HDV 1440x1080 non-square comp
C) We will first convert your original comp to 1920x1080 and then nest this into a HDV 1080 comp to get you to B (as above).

Running A Javascript
1) Select your comp in the Project Panel. Select File>Scripts>Run Script File. You will then be prompted with an Open FIle dialog window.
2) Select ScaleComp.jsx

Next, you will see a dialog window generated by the script, prompting you for the new dimensions for the comp. The dialog provides three ways for you to tell the script what you want it to do. Since you know the dimensions for the new comp (1920x1080), enter the value for either the width or the height. Hit Enter or click on te OK button.

That's it! Take note that layers are scaled and camera zoom levels are changed and occasionally camera positions are also changed. More often than not, these work straight off the bat. Otherwise, it's a matter of tweaks but nothing major.

Take note that in Step 1, above, when you select Scripts, there is a list of Javascripts listed. Selecting them will preclude the opening of the Open File dialog window.

Roland, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Thank you so much for explaining how to run the JavaScript for me. Per your instructions it worked out really great. The only thing I had to do was redo two layers I had with a partials on it. Everything else was fine.
Thanks again.
Mark
