lighting a scene
by Ross Kidd on Oct 16, 2008 at 11:01:19 am

Hi,

I want to create this scene in After Effects.

http://welovethedesign.com/myscene.jpg

The problem is I keep getting grey or black unlight areas when I use spotights (as you would expect).

All I want is for each of the elements to cast a shadow and for the shadow to move but for the whole scene to be white.

Many thanks,

R.

try adding an ambient light and playing with the intensity.

Tried that when the scene is less than 100% the edges of the spotlight show, at 100% ambient the shadow goes.

I suppose I am just trying to emulate the sun. Is there a way to increase the diameter of the spotlight?

That scene doesn't look lit. It looks like they faked the shadows by using additional layers for the shadow elements. Have you tried faking your shadows rather than casting them?

Gary,

After thinking about this for a while, I was coming back to post the same answer as you....i guess you beat me to it :-)

And yes, you can increase the size of the spot by increasing cone size in the light settings dialog, and/or pull the light back in Z-space.
