hello everyone,
so i want to animate a stroke as if it were drawing itself over time. ive used the solid layer, generate stroke technique and while it does provide the desired effect, i cant composite it over something else since its a solid layer covering everything underneath it. is there another way to do this? is there a way to maybe key out the solid and just keep the path with the stroke generator doing its thing?

If you set the solid color to black, and the stroke to white, you can set the other layer (the one you want to reveal) to use the stroke as a luma matte.

Most of the effects within AE's Effect>Generate category has an option to only view
(1)the result of what is generated
(2)a composite of what is generated together with the source layer's original content
(3)or to reveal the original content using the generated elements
(4) or variations of the generated content together with the original content
Look out for the parameters that allow you to set these options. For Effect>Generate>Stroke, you'll find these options within the Paint Style parameter.
