Zoom effect doesn't work out

Hello everyone. I have actually no idea where to post this and by all means move it to the right location if it's wrong. I have sought for help all over google, but I couldn't come up with a answer so I'm turning to you guys.
I'm currently making an animation which would represent the marsrover on mars.
I have modeled the marsrover in 3d and the backdrop of mars is a highres nasa image. I rendered the 3d animation in TIF format with the floor as a matte to bring the shadow on the backdrop. Imported both to after effects and started animating.
The scene shows the camera panning the mars environment (backdrop moving to the left) and spotting the rover at work. Now I want to zoom in on that rover, actually zoom in up close to a digital display on the rover itself, be it in 1 or in 3 steps. But I have absolutely no idea where to go from here. I mean what to do for the zoom.
I have tried the following. Zoom in on the rover (3d animation) with the camera, but keying the backdrop in AEX is a serious pain in the ass and an undoable job.
I have tried to use a Radial/Zoom blur for the zoom effect, but somehow that doesn't cut it. I tried to zoom in on the low res animation and do a fadeover with a highres marsrover (use blur and zoomblur) but it doesn't work seamless.
Tried finding some zoom tutorials, but all I could find was the Earth zoom tutorial from Andrew Kramer heh.
Tried finding some other videos for some inspiration and idea's for a similar effect, but alas, no luck there either.
Tried to do a photographic zoom. But that looked really amateuristic.
I've even tried the simple cut the shot to the next more zoomed in shot follow up mode, but alas
So my question is... Does anyone know or can anyone suggest me a simple but smooth zoom in effect, any suggestions, links to video's to give me an idea, zoom tutorials, and what not is very much appreciated..

Hi Roland, thnx for your reply. Actually, it's impossible to use that one as it is a zoom from stacked highres layers into 1 simultaneous zoom. What im looking for is a different zoom from 4 different types/sizes that are impossible to link simultaneously. Sorry for making it so hard.
