Is anybody using Windows xp/vista 64bit with AE?
by Andre Monteiro on Oct 3, 2008 at 11:11:57 am

I recently bought a new workstation and was really confused in choosing my OS. I wanted to have vista 64but was afraid about compatibility issues as I have experienced many when tried using xp 64.
So I sticked with xp 32, which sucks about performance and specially RAM.
I have a dual Xeon quadcore 3.0 ghz, Nvidia quadro fx 4600 and unfortunately 4gigs of RAM
My currently softwares are:
Complete Adobe creative suite CS3
Genarts Sapphire
All Trapcode plugins
Cinema 4D
Boujou
TV paint
I would like to know if there are people out there with the same configuration as mine using a 64 bit system and if are they experiencing any issues?
Thank you

I've been using XP64 for a few years now.

Con
- Quicktime acts funny (doesn't work in C4D 64bit)
- USB and Firewire can hang your system
- Old hardware doesn't work (printers...)

Pro's
+++You can use lots of Ram
+Cinema 4d works in 64 bit

Using XP64 or Vista64 you'll have access to all 4 GB but,
once you've worked on a machine with 8 or 16 GB of Ram, you'll never want to go back. So get a t least another 4 GB.

For now I'm staying with XP64sp2 cause it flies on a 3GHz quad.

Thanks for the responses!
The reason I have only 4gigs of RAM is just because there is no point on adding more if working in 32 bit, I'm hungry for more RAM!
I'm happy with the good news from you guys.
But what about the AE plugins and boujou?
Also I don't quite get it about the quicktime in C4D. Do you mean it doesn't render properly in QT format?
And I'd really like to know what the masters have to say about it? Ahron,Eran I'm you guys fan!
Thanks everybody, hope more people hop in!

Since AE isn't 64bit it will run in 32bit-mode and 3rd party plugins are working fine. Boujou runs on XP64 also, but will run in 32bit-mode.
Cinema 4d has a 32bit and 64bit version.
If you run C4d in 64bit you'll have to check that your 3rd-party plugins have 64bit versions or they will only work in the 32bit version.
About Quicktime;
In C4d64bit you have no option to choose Quicktime as render-output or texture, only image sequences and avi.
I got used in working with Image sequences now.

or

if you use multiple machines;
-Run the 32bit Net Render Server
-Run the Net Render Clients in 64bit

this way you can render to Quicktime but keep the Render Clients in 64bit.
In my experience 64bit rendering gives about 15% speed-increase.
If you have a few thousand frames to render... it's worth the hassle !

So the bottom line among users of AE on 64bit is............

Go with XP over Vista??

Go with 64bit over 32bit??

XP over Vista
Since Vista isn't anything more than a brushed-up XP, but is much more resource-hungry, I'll stick with XP for now.
When vista gets mature or when a new windows comes around... i'll check again.

64bit over 32bit
There are some difficulties to overcome with X64,
most of them are hardware some software.
But once you've been working on 8- or 16GB Ram machine and fool around with Full-HD.... you'll never go back !
