Opening a door in 3D- trouble with edge
by Keri Rainock on Sep 30, 2008 at 9:04:58 pm

I've got an illustrated door that I open in 3D space. The client wants the door's edge to move in space as well to give it a feel of depth. I took the edge that was illustrated on the door into a seperate layer and parented it to the main door, but as the door swings the edge moves around wildly.

I know my description sounds a little confusing, but pretty much I just want a 3D edge to stay hooked to a layer rotating in 3D space.

Build a door. Depending on how you illustrated it, the process could be a snap.

You'll need a door front & back, plus edges. Put these layers into a 3D comp, then assemble your door. Remember that 0 in z-space is the z coordinate of the anchor point for a 3D precomp -- it will be important later on.

Bring this 3D comp into your main comp. Make it a 3D layer, and turn on the Collapse Transformations Switch, the sun-looking icon next to the Shy Guy icon. Your 3D precomp becomes a 3D OBJECT.

Move the layer's Anchor Point to the side of the door where the hinge should be. Position the door in the door frame. Rotate the door layer on its y axis.

The door opens, and you see the edge of it.

What did you use to create the door?
Also, are you using Layer Styles?

I figured it out, I just wasn't thinking about where the side was located from all dimensions- thanks!
