trapcode particular custom snow
by Keri Rainock on Sep 30, 2008 at 8:57:33 pm

I've looked everywhere, but I can't find the specific answer to my question- I've got to create gently falling snow in trapcode particular, but the snow has to be a custom illustrated layer and not something automatically generated. First off, I can't figure out the right settings to get the effects of gently falling snow, and second, whenever I try to substitute my illustrated snowflake for the layer, it wants me to turn everything 3d, but when I do, it doesn't generate anything. I've tried using the presets, but they aren't quite the look I want, and I run into the same problems.

[Keri Rainock] "First off, I can't figure out the right settings to get the effects of gently falling snow, and second, whenever I try to substitute my illustrated snowflake for the layer,"

For the movement, either you create it with a single layer in a precomposition or you use Particular's built-in physics generator. It's mostly easier to keyframe a single instance using good old transform properties and then use this as a custom particle.

Once you're in the 'final comp' and within Particular, Choose custom particle and ensure that the Time parameter for particle is Start at Birth and Loop.

Ensure that your particle, in the precomp is only as long as you need it to be.

Using custom particles are easy and the custom particle can be either a 2D or a 3D layer. You mentioned a layer but I have no idea which layer it is that you are talking about.

FWIW, there are lots of particular tutorials on Trapcode's Website and the COW to has a few of these. Perhaps track there and hopefully you'll find your way.

OR, come back with more accurate description of your issues on using a Custom Particle.
