Rendered QTs have colored banding
by Mark Dugas on Sep 17, 2008 at 11:41:30 pm

Hello there,

I am trying to render AVID DNxHD Codec, 1920 x 1080, 59.94 quicktimes of moves on sepia still images (Ken Burns style). Some of the quicktimes have colorful horizontal banding that appears intermittently when the Quicktime is played back, and when it is imported into the Avid. Most of the quicktimes in the same render batch are fine, but about 20% have this banding. Any idea what is happening? I can email you a screen grab if this helps.

Thanks very much,
Mark

DNxHD uses same compression as JPEG does. After a while, you get really bad generation loss. I don't think even upping from 8bpc to 16bpc and 8 bit to 10 bit precision will help but you can try.

Try rendering to the animation codec, then re-importing to the Avid. I know you will lose the quick import feature in Avid, but it may solve the issue. I have had issues rendering to the DNX codec, but they had more to do with motion blur not showing up properly.

Regards
