I am looking for a texture of the map of the world to map on a sphere in AE.

I am not finding a good image to start with.

anyone know of a good source for this?

I have checked iStockphoto to no avail.

Have you had a look at Andrew Kramer's 'Earth Zoom' tutorial? He provides the textures he used in the project file as well:
