I want to remove the darkened vignette of the improperly lit background and leave the rest as close to what it is as possible. I've tried a number of things, and am afraid I'll have to resort to masking the entire 10 minute video.
I've tried motion tracking, but looks wonky when the head rotates. I've tried simple color correction, but lose information elsewhere in the image.
Please let me know if you have any ideas of a quick yet effective solution.

You could run a key (keylight) with a fairly heavy feather on the resulting edges. You can use this rough key as an alpha matte for an adjustment layer which contains your background levels adjustment.
